OF DUE DATES.
So, read all of The Bigger World, by Jan. 29.
We all have everyone's first packet of poems. We will read
them five at a time, which means read six each week in
case someone is absent. So, for the 29th, read, edit, and
comment on Carly Beck's poems, Chad Forbregd's, Ashley
Heatherly's, Samantha Hunsberger's, Elizabeth Miley's,
and Justin Miramontes's . . .
Also, hand in the Ashbery imitation and the lit mag analysis (300
words) on Jan. 29. I posted three examples of Ashbery imitations
from past years below (scroll down). For the mag analysis simply
comment on everything from the design, the content (and style of
the work), perhaps what you thought was strongest, along with
perhaps what you thought was night quite as strong. Just type it
in a big paragraph (or two) and it can be single spaced.
The Kocot poem is due on Feb. 5.
Yes, write your Ashbery poem, bring it to class (hide it), DO NOT
PUT YOUR NAME ON IT, and secretly hand it to me. I will come
to class on Feb. 5 with copies of the poems plus an original Ashbery
poem, see if we can guess which is which. That's the idea.
Here's a short Ashbery poem:
This Room
John Ashbery
The room I entered was a dream of this room.
Surely all those feet on the sofa were mine.
The oval portrait
of a dog was me at an early age.
Something shimmers, something is hushed up.
We had macaroni for lunch every day
except Sunday, when a small quail was induced
to be served to us. Why do I tell you these things?
You are not even here.
