POST ON FEB 24

Thanks for the Oeding manuscripts, and the questions . . .

Kind of a simple post--I want to go through manuscripts
right away, and I want to do it in such a way that we
more quickly identify NO manuscripts, make some headway.

See posts below for other assignment deadlines.

Bring a manuscript with the additional poems on March 8.

Remember this:

2. In the anthology. Read Elizabeth Bishop and Robert
Lowell. They were very close friends. Write a 150
word paragraph (typed) on each poet (due a week from
this coming Tuesday). Which do you prefer, which poems
(singly) do you favor and why. Make an effort to read
with history in mind. In other words, read imaginatively,
understanding how these poets must have sounded
revolutionary at the times they were writing.

The entries on the two magazines are due March 22.

In the anthology read the poems of Frank O'Hara and John
Ashbery. These two comprise a major part of what's called
The New York School poets, and in many ways THEY were
influenced by the painting and cultural shifts and booms
in art that were taking place in New York City in the middle
of the twentieth century. James Schuyler, Kenneth Koch,
and Barbara Guest were also part of this movement . . .
For one thing they were reacting against the preciousness
or the lyric as it arrived dripping with big E emotion after
the Romantics got their hands on it.

We'll get through a couple sets of poems--sorry this
is taking so long, but a thing takes as long as it takes.

Thank you.

Chrissy, two magazines, and the assignment that goes with
them, are lodged in the wall box outside my office at 3179
Wiekamp. You can pick them up whenever . . .
