As far as reading simply add Michael Burkard and
Jennifer Moxley in AH for next week. I will mention
poems in Downsides . . .

Please email me your "Ashbery poem" by Feb. 6. Imagine
what a blast that will be to write!

After several months of workshopping (fall term), which I
do enjoy, I always find what we do in this class, slowly
accumulating poems into a ms., to be so much more telling.

In some ways the discussion becomes a bit more about
what's simply there--themes--or whatever you want to call
them--and textures announce themselves and meaning
stands right out. It almost feels absurd to identify them.
Instead of getting a scalpel out and into a single poem the
transitions from poem to poem echo with rhythms and
psychological urgencies and it's easier to point out what
doesn't fit--what works is what the poems are trying
to be about. You can't write 24 pages of poems without
somehow KNOWING what's beginning to take off in your
work.
