So, from the poem packets we all have now in our
possession--we'll read the first five. That is, read the
poems by Nick, Lucas, Stevy, Niall, and Jessica. Some
advice: Yes, read the entire packet. You want to read
for flow, and both form and subject are relevant. Again,
should anything be cut? Use the ms. criteria, etc. In
class each poet will read the new (added) poems, and
explain a bit the thinking going on (or explain the
experience of the process).
As for Mr. Dean Young, read through page 65 (it's a
fast read) also, focus on these poems:
Lucas: Even Funnier Looking Than Now
Jessica: Drama In Last Acts, The Brutal Filament Aglow
Jennifer: Clam Ode
Stevy: Charm School, Gaga Gala (p. 84)
Chris: Changing Genres
Austin: Casting Off
Niall: The Business of Love is Cruelty
Nick: Bolinas, California
Tom: Bird Sanctuary
In fact, everyone focus on The Brutal Filament Aglow and Gaga Gala.
I'm posting Niall's poem just so everyone knows I'm watching
the blog like a hawk. I couldn't help posting this due to the image
of "Mary / in comic waders, in a swamp." But I like everything
that's finding its way onto the blogs, including the rankings, which
are not so predictable as they first appeared they would be . . . Keep it
up: I'm marking these down, little smiling Statue of Liberty faces
for each in rows in my grade book (or a frowning Helen Keller).

Everything I Know Up Until Now
by Niall Garvin
I should never have trusted
that I would transcend
my small and panting mass
in a feeble grasp at the universe.
Everything up until now
came thoughtlessly –
parasitic – given the sheer
number of mosquitoes
in the world. I imagine Mary
in comic waders, in a swamp.
I contemplate survival a moment
because, I know, la vie est ailleurs.
